Social stories
"A social story can be used by school and home consistently…to make sense of what has happened or what might be going to happen."
Social stories can be particularly useful to help a young person make sense of some of the rituals of death. These might include what happens at a funeral, why adults feel sad, or how we can remember a person when they have died. Relating the social story to a previous experience, or something they already know, can be helpful. For example, a story in a book, the death of a pet, a film, changing seasons.
It can be helpful if social stories are personalised to include pictures, photographs, special places, and links to a pupil’s particular interests. Sharing these with parents/carers will help to reinforce the message and provide a consistent approach.
